ThickSkin is a multi-disciplined theatre company, using text, movement and devised techniques. Our Generator auditions focus on these elements:
- Auditions (in person): Groups of up to 14, led by Artistic Director Neil Bettles. You can expect a physical warm-up, writing exercises, and creative movement tasks in pairs or small groups. No dance training required—just natural physicality and teamwork skills. You will also be sent a short piece of text in advance which we will ask you to perform after the movement session.
- Rehearsals: Intensive, collaborative sessions led by Neil Bettles and our Associate Director, where the company devises the original show together for four public performances.
- Performances: Held in Wigan, at The Engine Room (formerly Mill At The Pier), open to the public and industry guests.

FAQ’s
Do I need performing experience to take part?
You don’t need any previous experience as a performer, although we expect there to be a range of skills and experience amongst those who sign up. You should be ready and willing to try creative tasks that include movement, text and working in a team. We’re looking for raw talent and commitment, whether you’ve done lots of performing before or very little.
What are you looking for?
We’re looking for theatre makers aged 18-25 who are interested in, and actively taking part in theatre & performance. You should be interested in a career in theatre, and looking to develop your performing skills in a fast paced collaborative environment. We’re looking for people who have a natural talent – we are looking for people who are interested in a career in theatre and want to develop their performing skills.
Will I be paid?
Yes, this is a paid training experience and we will pay for your time at the ITC/Equity minimum rate which is £601 a week, plus holiday pay.
I’m not available for the audition dates but I really want to take part

I’m not available for the performance dates
The performance dates are important. If you are not available on 20-22 November, you won’t be able to take part.
I am usually at work or college on these dates
If you are keen to take part but think some of the dates will clash with your college or work commitments then please contact us. We will consider your availability on a case-by-case basis. If you are selected for the performance company we will write to your college/ employer to request your involvement in the project.
Is this work experience?
No, this is a fully paid training opportunity. You will be treated as a professional to give you a true experience of working in a performance company and you will be able to include this work experience on your CV to help kick-start your career in the arts.
